Mattress Return Fees by Brand (2026): What You’ll Pay
Last Updated: November 2, 2026
Quick Answer: Mattress return fees vary by brand. For eligible U.S. trial returns, Casper and Helix advertise no mattress return fees, Saatva charges a $99 pickup processing fee, and Tempur-Pedic charges a $175 plus tax return fee. Nectar and DreamCloud charge no fee to process a Return Request but exclude certain original charges from refunds. Purple deducts transportation charges without publishing one universal dollar amount on its current return page.
Free returns do not necessarily mean every dollar you paid comes back. Check original delivery or setup charges, discounts, purchase-channel rules, geographic restrictions, and trial eligibility before comparing brands.
This guide compares seven brands' published policies for new mattresses purchased through eligible sales channels for U.S. delivery. It focuses on comfort-trial returns rather than warranty claims. Final-sale items, clearance items, bundles, older orders, and purchases from third-party retailers may have different terms. These are policy comparisons, not a national average.
Mattress Return Fees by Brand
Amounts below are the brands' stated return-related charges. They do not necessarily represent your total financial loss because original delivery, setup, financing, discounts, or other charges may receive different treatment.
| Brand | Stated return charge | Important refund detail |
|---|---|---|
| Casper | $0 restocking, pickup, and processing fees for eligible mattress trial returns. | Casper's Terms state that shipping costs and fees are not refunded and that in-home setup fees are final. However, its current Return Center separately says Alaska and Hawaii shipping charges are refunded. Confirm the refund treatment shown for your specific order. Trial policy; Return Center; Terms. |
| Helix | $0 return fee; brand-arranged mattress return shipping and removal are free. | Refunds are issued net of applicable discounts, gift codes, and shipping fees. A completed paid in-home delivery and setup service is nonrefundable. Return guarantee; Terms. |
| Saatva | $99 pickup processing fee. | The $99 pickup processing fee applies to an eligible mattress return during the home trial. Home trial and returns. |
| Tempur-Pedic | $175 plus tax, nonrefundable return fee. | The fee applies to eligible returns and trial exchanges; a model price difference can also apply to an exchange. 90-night trial. |
| Nectar | No fee to process a Return Request. | Approved refunds exclude applicable shipping, White Glove Service, and state-based recycling fees. Products shipped outside the contiguous U.S. are ineligible for return. Returns policy. |
| DreamCloud | No fee to process a Return Request. | Approved refunds exclude applicable shipping, White Glove Service, and state-based recycling fees. Products shipped outside the contiguous U.S. are ineligible for return. Returns policy. |
| Purple | Transportation charges are deducted from the refund. No universal dollar amount is listed on the current mattress-return page. | Purple states that the transportation deduction will not exceed its then-standard freight charges. Ask for the order-specific amount before authorizing pickup. Returns and exchanges. |
Do not treat an unpublished amount as $0. Purple's policy establishes a transportation deduction and a maximum based on its standard freight charges, but the public page does not provide enough information to calculate every customer's deduction in advance.
Trial Periods and Minimum Waits
A long sleep trial does not necessarily allow an immediate comfort return. The minimum-wait column below applies to an opened mattress being returned because it is not a comfortable fit.
| Brand | Published mattress trial | Minimum wait or adjustment guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Casper | 100 nights from delivery | 30-night adjustment period required before a mattress trial return. |
| Helix | 365 nights | At least 30 nights required before initiating a mattress return. |
| Saatva | 365 nights | No mandatory minimum trial period. |
| Tempur-Pedic | 90 nights | At least 30 days recommended. The current policy describes this as a recommendation rather than a mandatory return cutoff. |
| Nectar | 365 nights | Opened-mattress Return Requests can be made no earlier than 30 days after delivery. |
| DreamCloud | 365 nights | Opened-mattress Return Requests can be made no earlier than 30 days after delivery. |
| Purple | 100 calendar days | At least 21 days of sleeping on the mattress required. |
Timing sources include the brand policies linked in this guide plus Nectar's Trial Policy and DreamCloud's Trial Policy.
Nectar and DreamCloud allow Return Requests for unopened mattresses immediately after delivery. However, mattresses left unopened for more than 90 days after delivery are considered misused under their current policies and become ineligible for returns and warranty claims. Opened mattresses must also satisfy sanitary and donation-condition requirements.
Submit the request before the end of the applicable trial and confirm whether there is a separate removal deadline. Helix requires an approved mattress pickup and removal within 45 days after the 365-night trial ends when the return was requested within the applicable trial period.
What Can Reduce Your Refund?
- A new return charge: A pickup, processing, freight, transportation, or other charge associated with returning the mattress.
- A nonrefundable original charge: Money already paid for delivery, setup, recycling, shipping, or another completed service that the return does not reverse.
- A discount or bundle adjustment: Your refund may be calculated from what you actually paid rather than the item's undiscounted standalone price.
- Financing or interest: Some policies separately address interest or financing costs.
- A product outside the mattress trial: A mattress trial does not automatically make an adjustable base, bed frame, foundation, bedding item, or accessory returnable under the same rules.
Keep these categories separate. A $0 return-processing fee can still leave you out the cost of an original delivery or setup service.
Conversely, do not add a fee twice if the provider has already deducted it from the quoted refund.
Compare the refund with the amount you actually paid for the mattress after discounts. An unused coupon's face value is not additional cash that you paid.
Example Refund Calculations
Illustrative examples only: Assume the mattress price after discounts is $1,000. The scenarios below omit taxes, financing charges, bundle adjustments, and other order-specific items. The $150 delivery charge is hypothetical and is not a published charge from one of the brands above.
| Hypothetical situation | Original amount paid | Refund | Amount not recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| No return fee and no nonrefundable extras | $1,000 | $1,000 | $0 |
| $99 return fee and no other deductions | $1,000 | $901 | $99 |
| No return-processing fee; $150 original delivery service is nonrefundable | $1,150 | $1,000 | $150 |
The second example is:
$1,000 − $99 = $901 refund
The third example is:
$1,150 paid − $1,000 refunded = $150 not recovered
The third scenario does not mean the customer paid a separate $150 mattress return fee. It illustrates an original service charge that remains nonrefundable.
Retailer Purchases, Bundles, and Bases
Check the seller listed on your receipt before relying on a manufacturer's direct-order trial.
Casper states that third-party retailers have their own return policies. Tempur-Pedic's direct 90-night trial applies to mattresses purchased directly online, by phone, or from Tempur-Pedic Flagship Stores and excludes ordinary third-party retailer purchases. Purple directs customers with retail-location purchases to the store.
Nectar and DreamCloud state that their 365-night mattress trials apply to direct purchases and purchases from certain authorized retailers. That does not mean every retailer purchase automatically receives the same trial.
Bundle rules also differ.
Casper generally requires the entire mattress bundle to be returned rather than allowing a partial bundle return. Saatva says that when an eligible bundle item is returned, the customer receives the refund applicable to the item or items actually returned.
Product categories can also have different return rules. Saatva specifically excludes its adjustable bases from returns and exchanges under its mattress home-trial section. Purple publishes separate rules for frames and other products rather than treating every bedroom item as part of the mattress trial.
For older orders, ask the seller which policy applies to your original purchase date. A current website policy does not by itself establish that newer terms apply retroactively.
What to Confirm Before Requesting a Return
- Eligibility: Confirm the seller, mattress model, delivery date, required adjustment period, geographic eligibility, and whether the mattress was sold as final sale or clearance.
- Written refund estimate: Ask for the mattress refund and every deduction as separate line items.
- Original charges: Ask whether shipping, delivery, setup, recycling, or other services are refundable.
- Condition requirements: Report stains or damage accurately. Purple requires an eligible returned mattress to be clean and undamaged with the mattress law tag attached and requires photos.
- Approved removal: Get the brand's instructions before hiring your own mover, donating the mattress, or disposing of it. Helix states that it does not reimburse unauthorized return shipping or removal costs without express written consent.
- Deadlines: Save the date of your request and confirm any separate pickup or documentation deadline.
- Evidence: Keep your return-request confirmation, pickup receipt, photos, donation documents, and refund statement.
Nectar and DreamCloud require customers to provide the information and documentation requested by Customer Support within 30 days after the Return Request process begins. If the required information is not submitted within that period, the request is canceled and must be resubmitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “free mattress returns” mean I get every dollar back?
Not necessarily. A brand may charge no mattress pickup or return-processing fee while still treating an original setup, shipping, recycling, or other service charge as nonrefundable. Compare the net refund, not only the advertised return fee.
Are Casper's original shipping charges refundable?
Casper's current published pages are not perfectly consistent on this point. Its Terms state that shipping costs and fees are not refunded, while its Return Center says customers who paid shipping to Hawaii or Alaska will receive those shipping costs back. Its in-home setup service is identified as nonrefundable after it has been performed. Confirm the refund treatment for your specific order before relying on either general statement.
Is Purple's mattress return fee a fixed amount?
Not on the return page reviewed for this guide. Purple states that transportation charges are deducted from the mattress refund and that those charges will not exceed Purple's then-standard freight charges. Ask Purple for the amount applicable to your order and location.
Can I return a mattress before the adjustment period ends?
It depends on the brand. Casper requires a 30-night adjustment period, Helix requires 30 nights, Nectar and DreamCloud do not allow an opened-mattress Return Request before day 30, and Purple requires at least 21 days of use. Saatva publishes no mandatory minimum trial period. Tempur-Pedic recommends at least 30 days but describes that period as a recommendation.
If the issue is delivery damage or a suspected defect rather than comfort, contact the company promptly instead of assuming the comfort-trial waiting period controls the claim.
Is exchanging a mattress cheaper than returning it?
Not necessarily. Tempur-Pedic applies its $175 plus tax fee to eligible trial exchanges as well as returns, and a mattress-model price difference can apply separately.
Saatva also states that an eligible exchange carries a $99 processing fee for delivery and pickup.
Do I need to squeeze a mattress back into its original box?
Follow the brand's return instructions. Casper says its courier can remove the mattress, and Helix says the original mattress box is not required for its arranged return process. Do not purchase packaging, freight, or independent removal before confirming what the brand requires.
Are Alaska and Hawaii covered by the same return rules?
Not necessarily. Nectar and DreamCloud state that products shipped outside the contiguous United States are ineligible for return under their current return policies.
Other brands use different geographic rules. Check the policy applicable to the exact shipping address before ordering.
Your Final Check
Compare the net refund, minimum-use requirement, trial deadline, geographic eligibility, and removal process together.
Before purchasing, save a copy of the seller's current policy and ask:
If I return this mattress during the trial, exactly how much money will be refunded to my original payment method, and which charges will not be refunded?
That question is more useful than asking only whether the brand advertises “free returns.”
